Ignore the comments as usual, but I didn't even think this was a thing:
Basically, all the little microfibres and things coming off your clothes in the wash - particularly polyester - are being eaten by marine life and sickening them, just like plastic 'microbeads' craze.
And the solution is pretty simple - run the water outlet from your washing machine through a simple filter before it goes down the drain.
Time to go shopping?

$140 USD seems a bit much for what is essentially a basin with a filter in it.
This seems like the kind of thing that should just be standard on newer washing machines. Might poke local hardware stores to see what they have, at least.
